Natural marble and granite bathtubs represent high-end luxury sanitary ware, valued for their unique aesthetic and substantial craftsmanship. However, due to their extreme weight (often exceeding 500 kg to 1,000 kg) and high vulnerability to structural hairline cracks, international sea transit poses severe logistical challenges.
A single breakage or chip during maritime shipment not only ruins high-value inventory but also disrupts construction timelines for hotel projects or residential builds. Implementing professional, bulletproof packaging standards is essential for stone manufacturers and overseas buyers to guarantee 100% intact delivery.
1. ISPM-15 Compliant Wooden Crate Architecture
Customs authorities worldwide—particularly in North America, Europe, Australia, and the UK—enforce strict biosecurity regulations on imported wooden packaging materials.
- Fumigation & Heat Treatment: Solid wood crates must undergo certified Heat Treatment (HT) or Methyl Bromide (MB) fumigation, stamped visibly with the official IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) symbol. Alternatively, export-grade plywood (exempt from fumigation) with a minimum thickness of 18–20mm is widely utilized.
- Reinforced Pallet Base: The crate base must integrate a heavy-duty, cross-braced runner structure (“井”-shaped bottom design) capable of supporting multi-ton static loads.
- 4-Way Forklift Access: The base must provide clear 4-way entry channels for heavy-duty forklifts, eliminating manual tilting or improper handling during port transshipment.

2. Advanced Internal Cushioning & Moisture Barriers
Preventing stone-on-wood contact and absorbing sea vessel vibrations require a multi-layered internal defense system:
- Scratch & Moisture Isolation: The bathtub surface is first wrapped in non-woven fabric followed by heavy-duty PE stretch film or vacuum-sealed plastic to block saltwater moisture, humidity, and atmospheric oxidation.
- High-Density EPS/EPE Foam Lining: The interior perimeter between the stone and the wooden wall is lined with 5cm+ high-density Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) or Expanded Polyethylene (EPE) pearl cotton. Custom-molded foam blocks fit the contours of the tub seamlessly.
- Edge & Lip Protection: L-shaped and U-shaped reinforced corner protectors are fitted over vulnerable tub rims and edges to absorb high-G impacts.

3. Internal Immobilization & Gravity Balance
Zero internal displacement is the gold standard for heavy stone packaging.
- Rigid Internal Blocking: Wooden blocking bars, foam chocks, and heavy-duty nylon tie-down straps lock the bathtub into position. Under rough ocean swells, the tub must remain 100% stationary inside the crate.
- Freestanding & Pedestal Support: For carved or clawfoot bathtubs, custom-cut wooden saddles padded with thick neoprene or rubber support the core center of gravity, relieving stress from delicate legs or thin structural bases.

4. External Reinforcement & Standardized Shipping Marks
The exterior of the crate must be built to withstand stacked container pressure and communicate clear handling instructions to dockworkers:
- Steel/PET Band Strapping: Fully enclosed crates are secured with high-tensile steel or PET plastic straps in crosswise and lengthwise patterns to prevent structural bursting under load.
- International Hazard & Handling Pictograms: Every crate must feature clear, weather-resistant markings on at least three sides:
- Fragile / Handle with Care (Glass cup icon)
- This Side Up (Upward arrows)
- Keep Dry / Protect from Rain (Umbrella icon)
- Center of Gravity (Crucial for forklift balance)
- Weight & Dimension Metrics (Net / Gross Weight)

Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Tub Packaging
Surface Cleaning & PE Shrink Wrapping
Thoroughly clean and dry the stone surface. Wrap tightly with multi-layer PE shrink film to lock out moisture and dirt.
360-Degree Foam Molding & Corner Guarding
Apply EPE pearl cotton and fit heavy-duty L-corner guards around all top edges, corners, and drainage openings.
Pallet Mounting & Internal Locking
Lower the bathtub onto the ISPM-15 compliant wooden base using soft-padded cranes. Secure the tub base with wooden chocks and high-strength ratcheting straps.
Crate Enclosure, Steel Banding & Marking
Enclose with heavy plywood panels fastened with screws (for easy inspection at destination). Apply steel banding, IPPC stamps, and international handling symbols.
